I have an ourdoor light looks like street light. It comes on at dark and turns off in light. The bulb has been going on and off througout the night so I thought it was the photo sensor but replaced and is still happening. Anyone have an idead if this could be bulb related or wiring? I have had the light up for several years with no problems until recenlty. Thanks

It seems the sensor is good, look for any other light that might be causing the sensor to have a false reading and causing it to think it is daylight. Try taking the lamp out and putting a little contact grease on the lamp to make sure you have good contact. Last look for a short in the socket and any connections including the breaker. Just make sure you turn off the power before attempting any connection checks to avoid injury. If all of that checks out then it is possible you could have a broken wire under ground. That can be checked through resistance, or ohms. You will have to have a meter for that, but if that turns out to be the case I would look at a new wire run. I hope this helps.

Is this a standard incandescent bulb or is it a high intensity discharge fixture?

A fixture with a failing ballast will cycle on and off.

If you have High Pressure Soduim luminaire { orange colour which you will see alot of street luminaires are }if that the case and if more than 3 to 5 year old it is time to get new bulb make sure you match the wattage what it on the unit

Their typical action when they are burn out they will cycle on and off { there are quite few wattage rating }( they have from 35 watt to large as 1000 watter )

But for Mercury Vapour luminaire { white-bleuish colour }their typicaly way to burn out is being very dim and common run of mill bulbs are useally 175 watter which it the most common and second most common is either 250 or 100 watter depending on the ballast and luminaire design.

If the new HID bulb fail to function then you have issue with either ballast or ingitor { only useally found with HPS and some MetalHalide's }

But If you have CFL { compat flourscent light } it will really depending on what type of bulb and size in there some will cycle on and off and some will just won't come on.

I will check the wiring and possibly replace the bulb to see if these may cure. Thanks for all the help.
