I'm trying to build a very simple portable grill but because I'm completely new to DIY I don't know how.
The sort of thing I want to build is seen here

as you can see it's basically some type of metal made into a little box, held up by 4 legs of the same material where you can dump charcoal into it. That's as far as I know

Hmm, where to start?
I guess you already figured it out,
Make a little box out of metal and stick legs on it. :D
How you make it will depend on what experience and tools you have.
If you want to do it as strictly a learning experience then it would be a good starter project.
But, if you wanted an economical bbq then be aware that to buy material and maybe a few tools for this project it would likely cost many times more to build rather than buy.
I would guess it would cost less than fifty bucks to buy one.
What would make it economical is if you could find your material at a scrap yard.
Many folks use an old fuel drum and cut it down to a suitable size, use expanded metal as a grate then make legs out old pipe.
A word of caution though is you have to be carefull of what was in the drum and do not use galvanized metal.
Do you have a welder and/or metal working tools?

Well I don't have any tools atm. I've got some experience from a 2 month sheet metal/ plumbing course but that's about it. I don't even know what material that thing is made of. The reason I want to build it is because it's the traditional way of cooking a certain meat recipe

That being the case you would do well to just buy a grill already made.
There are many places to get these.
Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8154164) is one.
Here (http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&search_query=charcoal+grill&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find) are other types.
I like any BBQ and am curious as to what you want to cook. :D

Nope that's def not an alternative, It's a Russian style food as seen in the pictures. I have tried cooking with a conventinal grill with bad results. It simply nees to be a metal charcoal holder with a deep inside

Hmm,
What I linked to appears to be very similar to what is in your pictures albeit a somewhat different size.

You definately would need some tools to build this, the number of tools would determine how well it would turn
out.
If you wanted the grill to be exactly like the ones shown
you would do well to go to a welding shop and have
them make it for you.
For someone who works with metal as a hobby this would be a most basic project.
Are you willing to turn this project into a metal working hobby and buy a bunch of tools?
To convert a barrel into a grill for example would require at least a jig saw with a number of extra blades, a hacksaw and extra blades, a drill and bits, bolts, a grinder or file to smooth the edges.
The material needed would be a steel drum of the size you need, some angle iron for the legs, some heavy expanded metal for the charcoal and assorted bolts.
We'd really like to help with this but there is no simple
tool free way to do it.
I have a bit of Russian in my background and am not familiar with this dish.
Do you have a link to a recipe or can you give away your secret?;)
