[FONT="Times New Roman"]When TV warms up the picture shrinks from the sides in a curve shape, leaving a black area on both sides of the picture. This occurs only at the sides and not every time the TV is turned on.

Post the model # for me to help you. Also you might try tapping on the set when it acts up to see if it is possibly a bad connection.

Thank you for your help so far. Model No. is FGS282TXT. We tried tapping on the side of the TV and yes it corrected itself. It didn't last for long.

The only way to fix it is to resolder the bad connection. Are you or someone you know good at soldering. If so let me know and I'll tell you the area it may be in.

Soldering not a problem. Where do I start. What saftey precautions should I be aware of when I take the back off the TV.

As long as you stay away from the top of the picture tube where the big red wire plugs in and the set is unpluged and only have one hand inside the set at a time you should be ok.
The bad connection is going to be between the high voltage transformer(the one with that big red wire going to the top of the picture tube) and the horizontal output transistor (About 1/2" wide ,1" tall, mounted on an alluminum heat sink). The area of the cold solder joint should be within about 6" of the transformer.Look for a connection with a crack in it.It may be hard to see , but most likely will be a crack going around the component lead.
If you have trouble finding it there let me know.

Found high voltage transformer, having trouble finding horizonal output transistor. When you say an "alluminum heat sink" what do you mean? You say that the transistor is 1/2" wide and 1" tall, what is its depth or is it round? Is it likely to be any particular colour, or have any wire coming from it.

The metal parts sticking up from the circuit board are used for heat sinks to help parts that run hot to dissipate the heat. The transistor to look for will be mounted to one of these. It usually is black, has 3 legs coming out of it.The middle leg will be connected to one pin of the transformer. You have to follow the connection from the under side of the chasis. The bad connection should be on one of the other parts that are also connected to this same foil run.The bad connection could be on iether side of those parts or on other parts located close by.
