I just bought a older boat 1969 and when I try to put it in reverse it will rev up and then makes a loud klunk noise then it will go in reverse. Any Ideas as to what can be done?

I would guess something broke in the gearcase. I would drain the fluid and check for metal. There shouldn't be any noises.

What happens if you have it out of the water with the engine OFF and spark plug wires off spark plugs and put it into reverse. It should ratchet in one direction and be solid like it is trying to turn the engine over in the other.

Is that the Quicksilver single-arm shift/thottle? I wonder if the shift cable has stretched and it's not shifting until the throttle is well into its travel. Normally it shifts before the throttle kicks in.

Thank you We found out it was the adjustment on the throtle.
