THe top stove burners work fine. The Broil element works fine. It is just the bake element that doesn't work. It is a Caloric oven. I can't make out the model number...

I was just wondering what typical culprits can be. Since the broil element works, does that imply that the bake element is likely receiving power? If it is indeed receiving power, then is it likely a bad igniter? Does each element have a separate fuse? I have no idea where the fuse would be located.

Hello Brian. Welcome to the Gas Appliances topic.

If the igniter fails to glow at all and all other selections and optional settings on the control panel are set correctly, the HSI will need to be replaced with a new part. Replacing it should solve the problem.

You can remove the existing igniter and replace it with a new igniter yourself. Not a difficult nor complicated task, if you are reasonably handy with small hand held tools and have the tools.

Install the new igniter exactly as you found the existing igniter. Be advise that some new replacement igniter's do not come with quick disconnect ends. In this case, it's okay to cut off the quick disconnect from the old igniter and attach it to the new igniter.

Simply clip off the wires several inches above the disconnect on the old igniter, attach to the wires of the new igniter and wire nut the two ends together. Repeat the process to attach the other wire and wire nut that wire together. There is no positive nor negative polarity to be concerned with.

Position the new hot surface igniter exactly as you find the existing one attached. Double check all electrical connections before turning the power back on or plugging in the appliance.

If it is required to remove the burner, be sure it too gets installed exactly as you find it now. The end of the burner tube with the air shutter adjustment must be installed back onto the gas valves bronze or brass orifice.

Glowing hot surface igniter's are fragile & break easily. Handle and install the new igniter carefully. Glowing hot surface ignites are a non returnable and non refundable electric component.

Thanks for the info. I removed the igniter (Norton flat igniter, part 309145, which I see is on ebay stores for $20). I tried testing for continuity. My ohmmeter just displays a 1 regardless if the leads are conencted to anything and when I place the leads across the igniter terminals it still just displays that 1. No idea what this means. I am just concerned that the problem might be with the control mechanism before the igniter...

It means you have a digital meter that displays 1. And when you touch the leads to something and it doesn't start jumping to a - sign and/or numbers, and just stays 1, then you are either not making good contact, or the device you are testing is indeed dead. Touch your leads to each other once, simulating 100% continuity (0 ohms/no resistance), and you will see how the meter is supposed to behave when there is either continuity or some resistance present.
