My wife bought me a 2000 Yamaha gas golf cart two months ago and it suddenly stopped running (completely dead.) I put a battery charger on it and got it to start running again after an overnight charge. I took it out for a few holes and of course at the furthest place from home it stopped again. This time it's making a clicking sound when I press the gas. I obviously am not mechanically inclined, so I could use someone's advice. Is it the battery??? Or worse??? Thank you!!!

First, tell us more about your cart. Is it gas or electric? How old is it or what model is it?
Have you checked the battery? How old is the battery? With what you've said so far I'm thinking battery.

Anyone else have a thought before I take this to the auto store to test and buy a new one? Thank you all.

Put a volt meter of the Battery and tried to start it if the voltage drops down quick, below 9 volts the it may be the battery but you should also jump it off and see it the charging system is working. This can be done with a volt Meter as well when running you should see 13.5-14.0 volts if the meter only shows what you started with, Buying a new Battery will not solve your problems. Hope this helps you.

Thanks Chopper, but I'm not sure how to do what you describe. I did have the battery tested and it was bad. I have the new one one and as you suggest, I still have a problem. I no longer have the clicking sound. In fact, when I move the switch to reverse, the beep comes on and when I press the gas, the beeping stops. When I get off the gas, the beep starts again...crazy. Thoughts???

It is easy to test get you a meter they are cheap ones out there that will do the test you want put it on v for volt dc that is and put the red lead on the positive and the black on the neg. to test battery voltage but you say it is not starting right now try jumping the solenoid at the starter which will have 3 terminals on it a big post that the battery cable is going to, an ing post and a start post stick a screw driver across the battery post and touch the start post it will have an s and the ing an I, leave your key on to do this and see if it turns over and starts then we can work from there.

Is your new battery charged?
At this point we need as many details as possible. You mentioned the reverse beeper not working when you depress the gas pedal. What does the cart do (what sounds do your hear) when you step on the gas to go forward? Do you hear a click, whirr, whine or does the engine sound like it is turning over trying to start?
---
When everything works properly everything below happens almost too fast to hear:
You step on the gas pedal a solenoid (electric switch that makes a click sound) is activated to send big power to the starter motor. So first you want the solenoid to "click" on. Then you should hear the starter motor turn (a whirring or whine sound). The starter motor (electric) is connected to the main gasoline engine by a belt. If the engine is turing over trying to start you should hear a "chug, chug" sound.
---
If your new battery is charged and you step on the gas while in reverse and the beeper stops beeping I am thinking you may have a bad/shorted starter or you could have shorted wire from the solenoid to the starter.

Thank you all for the great advice. I ended up having to take it in. It was the starter/starter brushes...so I was told. I'm supposed to get it back in a few days, so we'll see if it works!!! Hopefully, this will help others too!!!
