My mom just had a new Rheem 2.5 ton unit installed aproximate 1 month ago and in the past 3 week she called me stating thet the unit is not working ,she said the air handler is blowing hot air I had her check the outside unit to see if is running, she stated that the fan is running but nothing else in the outside unit. She turn the unit of for aproximate 30 minutes and the unit work fine afterwards. This has happened in numerous occacions but at erratic times not every day. The technician who installed the unit say it could be the copper line are to small for the new energy effiient unit(has to do with sear) an wants to charge another $800.00. Can any one shed some light on what could be the issue why this unit is working this way.

Is she an old lady that lives by herself?
I sure hope she did not choose a company that is taking her and her lack of any knowledge at all, for a ride. They should have known how to size the unit right when installing it, you'd think.
What did they charge to put in the unit? Just the outside unit, right?
I sure would be carefull on this one. It really be something if all that were wrong was some $20 or less capacitor, let's say. Depending especially on what they charged her for the new unit, you may want to get other diagnosis and estimates from other pros. If the current installers did something wrong, that could be pointed out by a second and third company. And then you might have a case against this first outfit if say they will not make good on correcting something they might be considered negligent in.
BTW, even if the sizing of the unit and tubes are all wrong, let's say, your mom still should have heard the compressor at least try to come on, you'd think (unless it buzzed and went out the time she got out there, where in that case she needs some assistance with say her turning down the stat while someone else goes out there). Not unless they balled something up so rediculous that the internal pressures would not allow the thing to get going.
