I have recently purchased a 1979 Glastron with a Johnson engine. To start the engine I have to spray starting fluid in the carburetor, when it starts I have to play with the throttle. When it is at high RPM it runs smooth as soon as I let go of the throttle the engine dies. Anything would help.

Its in your idle and midrange fuel circuits in the carburetor - they're probably blocked. What carb is it - a Rochestor automotive type?

Most likely your carbs are varnished and need to be cleaned.

Pull the carb, take it apart and give it a good 24-hour soak in carb cleaner. Agitate it every so often. A carb rebuild kit will come with new mission-critical parts and gaskets.
