I have a water leak on the underside of my kitchen sink.

I'm not sure of the how the gaskets go on.
I've put on plumber's putty on the sink basket side. What goes on first on the underside of the basket has me baffled.

As i look at the bottom it looks like a rubber gasket, then a paper(?) gasket, and finally the 4" basket gland nut. My concern is that the orientation may be wrong and causing the leak.

Also, is there some limit to tightening the basket nut? I'm thinking squishing out the plumber's putty and the gaskets.

Thanks

Use a bead of putty about the diameter of a Sharpie. Roll it back and forth in yer hands to warm it up. Put that in the sink flange. Rubber gasket goes underneath against sink, then paper. The paper is to allow the nut to turn easily. Though if it gets wet or wrinkled, there goes that theory. When thats happened to me, I've sprayed some silicone on the rubber to accomplish the same thing. Hold the basket from above with pliers or a strainer wrench (?) and tighten the nut down til the basket is fully seated and the putty squeezes out. It should ooze a bit more after the sink is used. I fill the sink with hot water and given it a final tightening after a day or 2.

Some baskets will seat/fit better than others. Don't know whether it was the sink or the basket, but it's been my experience that it happens.

Pro's may do it different, but thats the way I do mine.

Thanks for your reply

Your description describes what i have observed in my sink.
Good tip on the plumber's putty, silicone and re-tightening .
