I have a 48-year old entry lockset which I want to replace. The inside doorknob is lucite, and there is NO slot or pinhole visible to allow removal of this knob. Behind this knob is a plate which covers another plate anchored by two screws, but these screws are inaccessible! Is there a solution??

Some brands (especially some newer ones) do not have handles that simply pop off with a pin or disc retainer.

There are brands that require the faceplate to be pulled back and a lever on the side of the mounted assembly to be turned so that the handle mechanism separates from the rest of the unit.

Once separated, you can then access the retaining screws.

On some brands, you might need to take the faceplate of the latch (edge of door) to find a small Allen keyhole or flat blade screw hole which can be unscrewed, sometimes allowing the interior or exterior handle assembly to separate from the mechanism.

A picture or brand name would be quite helpful in this instance.

Thanks for your reply. The 48-year-old lock is a Schlage. I'm not sure what you mean by the faceplate. Is there something on the door edge that might release the knob? I'm not sure how to send a picture
