Thought I just had a backed up toilet. The line has been snaked to the street. Water runs free. The toilet is clear. Reintalled the toilet and all seemed to work fine. Flushed it 6 or eight times with no problem. Went back 15 minutes later, tried to flush and it backed up.

Any ideas?

I would look at the vent pipe next.

Did you go out and buy a new toilet because the old one did not flush?

I have had a problem in the past with the cast iron waste line (just below the flange) developing 'corrosion barbs' which would snag paper during the flush and cause a backup. An all water flush would be fine, but for a while there was an intermittent problem with flushing toilet paper. Been a while since I had this problem though.
