My daughter wants to replace a two bulb fixture in a bedroom with a single bulb "porcelin" type fixture. The wall has two switches, one for an uninstalled ceiling fan(house built in 2005). The old fixture had two white wires, two black wires, and a ground. These were connected as follows to the wires from the ceiling:
Whites to white
Blacks to red/white
Ground to ground
There was an unattached black wire with a wire nut in the ceiling receptacle.
We wired the single fixture(which has two silver screws and two brass screws) as follows:
White to a silver terminal
Red/white to a brass terminal
Ground from ceiling left unattached.
Light does not burn????????
Reinstallation of double light as described above :wall: :wall: and we have lights.
HELP!!!!!!!

Is there just one wire of each color in the ceiling box?
Are you sure the fixture is good? Are you sure the bulb is good?

Well, my son in law swears the fixture worked when he tokk it down from another room--but that was my next option.
Yes, appears to be a 4 wire romex with a white, a black, a ground and what appears to be red/white. But that may be just a red with some white paint on it--I didn't get to check it closely

The surefire sign is that you have red wire which it will useally hook up to the second switch so with the luminaire just hook up the black to black and white to white and bare to green or bare.
If you have screw temimals
Siver is white
Brass useally hot conductor either black or red
green for ground { can be either green or bare wire }
