I have a fully mulched flowerbed on a slope with wood as my retaining wall. When it rains hard the mulch slides down and falls off my wooden retaining wall causing a mess in my driveway. I was thinking of installing some landscaping edgers either the rolled black one or the plastic ones so the mulch will hit the wall and cannot fall through anymore. Is there a better method?

I was also thinking of simply adding another piece of wood on top to make the wall higher which I think would be the same result and be less expensive. I would only need 3 - 8' pieces to add another 4" of height.

Or will this be just a never ending problem as I will add more mulch as each year passes causing the ground and mulch to shift closer and higher to the wall being at square one again.

Please help!!!

Higher boards sounds like a good solution. Wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the old mulch once in a while instead of just adding new over the top.

MikeyBoy, any way you can plant a groundcover that will shade the soil so weeds won't take hold? I also find the shredded mulch tends to stay in place better in a heavy rain, but with a downpour on a steep slope, that might not help much. If it's not a large area you might be able to use deer or bird netting to secure the mulch.

Generally it's best not to remove the old mulch, but just give it a turn to allow air and water through before adding more. The mulch breaks down over time and adds nutrients to the soil. In your case you may find the soil level will get too high unless you add something to keep it from running over in the rain.
