i'm building a L shaped deck around my house. one section of it will cover the outside entrance to the basement. i am building a trap door to maintain continuity. is there a product (i.e. hinge, strut, door opener) that will work? the door will be around 82" by 36" and made out of 2x4 and 5/4 by 6" decking. I am looking for something that will make it easier to open. thanks.

Do a search on Google for "spring lift hinges" I got a few things but without knowing your exact application it hard to find what you need. Another option is go to a auto parts store and get some of those gas piston things that help lift a back door on a truck/SUV.

Here is one I found but I don't know if they would help you. They are from over seas.

That might be against code since it hinders a fire escape route. I wouldn't do it.

I would check with the building inspector first. If he/she okays it, no reason not to proceed.

I'll be very surprised if that's legal.

That's why you check with the building inspector.

Personally, I wouldn't do it even if there are no codes against it.

If the basement is used for just that (a basement) and not a bedroom or other finished space it will not be considered a fire escape. I have seen it done before with no problems. If you have finished the basement then I would get an inspectors opinion.

The basement is just that, a basement. When i submitted the plans to the city building inspector, i adressed the trap door issue. no codes and he approved my plans. the deck is finished and approved. the door is obviously heavy (i can pull/push it easily but my wife and kids have a hard time doing so. i am looking into the gas struts for van/suv hatch and now looking into 'spring lift hinges' (thanks Tolyn Ironhand)
