View Full Version : can't find refrigerator coils

I have a fridge in the basement that is running all the time and thought it might need a good cleaning. I pulled it out, no coils on the back, I looked underneath and there aren't any coils there either - though there is a lot of room under there. Really wierd and I don't know what to do. It is a magic chef and was given to me just a few days ago. It cools and freezes just fine but this constant running is very annoying.
thanks for any advise!

I presume you are only searching for the coils that get warm, so you can clean them of dust, right? If not behind and not under, then look under, again. Take off any cardboard at back bottom and see if you have the rarer type of coil that is flat and winds around the condensor fan in circles.

Your post reminds me of an old Candid Camera skit where a woman pulls into a gas station with no gas tank (her car was a set-up, by Candid Camera) and fools the gas station attendant who kept searching where to add the gas.

randresen,

Some refrigerators have the condenser coil fastened to the inside of the outer skin.
The sides and sometimes the top will be warm/hot telling you that you have this type.

It is very common for fridges to run too long as a result of setting the fridge/freezer temps too low.
In DegF the fridge should be around 36 and the freezer +10.
Often the freezer is set too cold and in many cases to an unreachable temp.
Freezers in fridges are only meant for very short term storage.

Check temps to see if this is the case with yours.

Most of the Magic Chef have coils just to the left hand side of the compressor, rolled up in kind of a coil, with a fan on the right hand side of the coils, and just left of the compressor. There usually is a cardboard piece held on by two screws hiding them.
