I need to install a ceiling fan but I'm not sure if the outlet box is one that can support it. The other rooms have a 1/2" deep circular box mounted under a wooden mounting beam but this particular room doesn't have one. The circular outlet box is mounted on some sort of metal hanger bar. I couldn't see anything from the attic as it's covered in insulation (wooly material) and therefore can't tell how the hanger is secured. One hint on the kind of hanger is it has a slider on which the the outlet box can be secured. Can I use this existing hanger for a fan? I'm hoping I can just use this one without any extensive work.

Thanks in advance.

Unlikely. However, for less than $20 you can probably remove this box and install a fan brace kit. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes (plus the trip to the store).

By the way, you can get a better look at this hanger bar by moving some of that insulation out of the way in the attic. Chances are it's just a skinny piece of aluminum.

Yes you are right. It is a skinny piece of aluminum. This fan brace kit - will it replace the aluminum or use the same skinny peice? Also, if the fan brace goes on separately what is the best way to secure this to the beams?

Thanks.

The fan brace kit will replace what you have. It can be installed from below. You probably have to bend/cut the existing aluminum brace to remote it. Then the new fan brace kit installs in minutes from below. Just follow the instructions. It's really easy.
