I am having a new custom china hutch delivered unfinished tomorrow. I want to stain the top honey oak and the bottom black. The counter to will be quartz.

Problem: I have not found a black stain that is really black and shows the grain of the wood. I have a quart of a very black oil base paint. Can I rub it on like a stain? Will it work? If so can I top it with a polyurithane?

Yes you can thin down flat black paint and use it as a stain underneath poly/varnish.

...you can use the oil based paint you have. Just remember you have to thin oil based paint with actual smelly paint thinner. then you'll want to seal with oil based sealer.

hope this helps,
Nikki

sorry :( :o . . I should have included that in my previous reply.
Yes you can use your oil base paint. Flat paint is easier to work with or controll than enamel but either one will work.

You want to top coat it with a couple of coats of either oil base varnish or poly. This will also darken the stain a little more.
