Have a little over 1 year old kenmore refrigerator two door model with the freezer above the refrigerator that is making a irregular noise that sound like ice dropping or releasing from the ice maker. The noise happens whether the ice maker is on or off. It is a fairly loud but very irregular noise that can be quite loud. We first thought it was the ice maker until we realized that the ice maker was no on. Any ideas other than the noise it works fine.

Open the freezer door the next time it makes that noise, and see if you locate what area it is coming from.

The noise is so irregular that you don't know when, so standing with the freezer door open doesn't seem to be workable. Just makes a noise .25 second and then not again for hours.

Sounds like it might be the ice build-up on the coils dropping or cracking when fridge goes into the defrost cycle. Try to take notice next time if fridge is not running when it happens.
In defrost cycle, compressor is off & a heater comes on in freezer under coils to melt ice off coils. Snapping, cracking, sizzle noises normal in this cycle.
