Air Conditioning - amana furnace making loud squealing noises

My furnace is making this very loud clanking and squealing noise off and on. It kind of comes and goes. It still blows cold air but, it is vey loud. What could this be? it is AMANA AIR COMMAND 80 SSE.

Metal squeal?

Could be blower wheel.

You should be able to remove the front panel and then hold in the panel switch. When the blower is rotating, look with a flash light to see if it's wobbling around.

What should I do if it is wobbling around?

replace it. Something is broken, wheel, motor mount,....

I worked at a home warranty place for a while and I remember technicians telling us to tell people to turn off their A/Cs when you hear this sound.

In other words, it's bad and you need to call a pro to fix it. Call an A/C company to confirm what I wrote here. I know it's nasty hot in many parts of the country right now. Get it looked at ASAP 'cause all the techs are swamped with work this time of year.:o

So, you have learned the hard way that when you come here and 2 of us say to TURN IT OFF, we are not just saying that to here ourselves talk.

I tell my kids the same thing along with "Which part did you not understand".

With all do respect Mr. jaredsdad, Only one person said "turn it off' and if you read what I wrote you probably saw that I said "I didn't get the message until AFTER the burning smell"

Have you proceded to call someone about this now? Or do you want to try to fix or replace it DIY? Up around my parts I can usually get new blower motors for about $100, give or take some depending on size and speeds. It is a good DIY job if you are at all mechanically inclined.

You are correct Sir, in this thread only Burbanker said to turn it off. I was thinking of another thread in which I said Turn It Off.

Sorry, but it wouldn't be a m=normal day if I didn't make a mistake or two.

Ecman is correct this is a DIY.

With the noise you heard in mind, I would say change the entire blower and motor.

With power off you should beable to spin the blower (hoping the motor isn't locked) and observe the wheel movement.

In fact since the motor does need to be replaced, you can remove the entire blower assy and look for metal to metal contact points.

Again, sorry if I sounded like a D***. What I said about kids is true. I do tell them what the deal is and occasionally let out rope, hold the end, and just wait. As Ed says, mistakes don't define, they educate.

Yes, we had someone come out and fix the problem. Thanks for the info. My husband is pretty much a do-it yourselfer
but ac work is something he doesn't know alot about. And it was too hot to try and figure it out. Soooo here we are 300.00poorer. But thats fine by me we aint sweatin!!! :D
