approx 5 yr old SAV405DAWW Maytag clothes washer. Came home from a trip today and wife said washer is leaking...took off front access panel and ran a low level empty cycle...when the washer started to agitate (wash
cycle after filling) I could see slight leaks/drips coming from above the transmission, switched to spin and water started coming out from same area but in a circular manner as tub spun and slung the leak.
Wife broke one of the plastic agitator fins a couple weeks back and it is noisy slightly unbalanced when it spins now. I am thinking there is a seal between the tub and transmission that must be bad.. How tough is it to replace? Does the tub have to be removed and if so is there a good reference book? The agitator has a softener dispenser on top then a middle portion which spins separately from the bottom or top. I am assuming that the dispenser comes off and reveals a nut in the center of the agitator which allows you to remove it..but haven't started that process without asking questions first.

Major job, tub and transmission have to come out, Here is a link to your machine
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/retrieveModelActionHome!retrieve.action;jsessionid=03nh+8BHuUVMUO9If+ngBw**.shcapp3205?modelNumber=SAV405DAWW&pop=flush
You will need serial # off machine, First 2 numbers give series # if your model number is same or above the number it that series.
Look under transmission and brake part 13 you will need to replace the agitator also.

Thanks pugsl, I pulled the agitator last night and called a couple places, $300-350 for repair, over a $100 for parts + cost of a tool to remove the tub just didn't add up so we bought a new front loader
