OK, so this post is not for the light-hearted.
I went on vacation for two weeks, and before I left, I neglected to see/throw away a cantaloupe that was sitting on the corner of our butcher block-top counter. I came back to a *horrible* smell. The cantaloupe had deflated like a balloon and seeped deep into the wood.
For now, I've covered it in Comet to try to soak up some of the stench... Any suggestions on how to salvage this furniture?? I'm afraid it will smell forever...
I'm a new homeowner, not too savvy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

if you bought that counter top from a show room or such i would contact them for ideas..there should be a sealer that you could apply if cleaning fails to seal in or out exisiting odors

Seems like covering the area in salt and rubbing with a cut lemon and letting stand overnight, is recommended for removing stains and odors in butcherblock.
But if that doesn't help, I agree with Doc. Go to a good countertop store.

Bleach/water solution should clean/disinfect butcher block. Stain may require sanding to remove. Once clean and stain removed, keep sealed with white mineral oil from pharmacy if counter is unfinished.
