I have a ceciling fan that has two seperate controls on the wall. One switch for the light and on another switch a control for the speed of the fan. When the fan was on the speed control switch was getting very hot so I bought a replacement switch.

The new switch has 3 wires. 2 black/1 green. When I took out the speed control switch it only had two wires. Both black. The instructions told me to use just the two black wires and cap off the green.

Now when I turn on the Ceciling fan and the lights are on the light seem like they are shorting out. The go dim and make a buzzing sound and the fan slows down. Then the lights go bright.

What did I do wrong?

When you replaced the control you may have inadvertantly caused a connection to become loose. Turn the power off and check all the connections in the switch box. Move any wires from the backstabs onto the screw terminals on the switches.

If you have a ground in the box your ground wire from the speed controller should be connected to them.
