In the past 6 months, there have been several power outages at my house that I found when I got home. The bad thing is, I didnt know if the power was out for a minute, an hour, or the entire day. So I usually end up having to empty my fridge and throw away all the stuff I am unsure about.
I would like to get some type of timer that can be plugged into the wall, and when the power goes out, it starts a timer. So when I came home I could just look and would know that the power has been off (or was off) for x minutes/hours/etc.
Anyone have any ideas?

I thought of that. Then I thought, what would happen if I went out of town for the weekend and came back, and the clock was off by an hour. Was it off for 1 hour, 13 hours, 25 hours, etc?
However, it is better than nothing, so I may still do that unless I can find something better to do.

I have a digital thermometer (bout $10-15, IIRC) that shows hi and low temps reached. I think it keeps them displayed until manually reset or the temp passes the previously saved hi or low temp. That would be better than just trying to decide whether to throw out food based on time the electric was out. Your fridge and freezer will keep the internal temps safe for quite a while as long as the door isn't opened.
Mine is a regular household wireless digital thermo, but a mechanical type with hi and low telltales would work too. I know they make them, I remember seeing them at some of my prior jobs in the reefers and freezers.
And BTW, where can you find a regular plug-in electrical dial type clock now-adays? A thrift store maybe? LOL j/k

GE's Alarm.com service and Honeywell's Total Connect can both send a notification via text message or email when a power outage occurs.
