My husband and I are trying to attach a light kit to our existing ceiling fan (both by hunter). We got everything hooked up correctly and the light didn't work. We realized that the ceiling fan needed to be taken off the ceiling so we could see the wiring above it. When we did that it was obvious the black and white striped light wire coming from the fan was attached to nothing. Now here's the problem. We don't know what to attach it to. There is 8 wires coming from the ceiling, 4 white and 4 black and that is it. 3 whites are attached together with electrical tape and then attached to the one white wire coming from the fan. One black wire is attached to the one black wire coming from the fan. The other 3 black and one white wires are just twisted together and wrapped with electrical tape. I thought there should be a red wire or some other color that we would attach our black/ white striped wire to but I may be mistaken. Keep in mind out house was built in 1953. Any help would be awesome!

that fine it pretty common with older home like that. read on you will understand more clearer .,,

Ok that is a netural wire connection.

One black wire is attached to the one black wire coming from the fan.

that fine that is from the switch loop.

The other 3 black and one white wires are just twisted together and wrapped with electrical tape.

The 3 black and one white is a contanst hot source and that white wire tied to the black wire is a dead giveaway due you have a switch loop there.

I thought there should be a red wire or some other color that we would attach our black/ white striped wire to but I may be mistaken. Keep in mind out house was built in 1953. Any help would be awesome!

Unforetally not very many junction box you will find with red wire in that era unless it was used with 3 way switching circuit.
some case it a end of a homerun and they split off the circuits after that.

However you have two options there you can have fan swtiched and use the pull chain to turn on and off the lumianire part or vice verisa let us know then we can tell you the correct connection there.

Thanks for your help!

I managed to find a site that said you needed to connect the light AND the fan wires to the black wire from the ceiling. I connected both of these wires to it and everything works perfectly. I can have both on or off depending on which way the switch is, or I can have on on one off by using the chains. I hope I did the right thing and am not about the blow up my house :D

You did well, except that twisting wires and covering them with electrical tape is no longer considered a sufficiently safe way to make connections. You should take off the electrical tape and twist on a wire nut securely on each connection.

John Nelson.,, Thanks for pointing it out it was a overlook on my sight due my long working hours got me for a minuite.,,

EHans.,, anytime you change the connecton you have to use the wirenuts to properly attached the wires safe.

In the old days they used soilder for it but not anymore.
