What type/length of fasteners should I use for installing cabinets? How many fasteners per cabinet? Is four enough for all sizes?

Cabinet screws..any box store or hardware store. Coarse thread, large head.

1 per stud per mounting rail (I think thats the right term). So if you have 2 mounting rails on a 36" cabinet (1 at the top, one below the shelf), you should be able to put in at least 6 screws.

This is a case where more is better. Just make sure they hit studs, otherwise they don't help.

Not for 'all' sizes. You should hit as many studs as are behind the cabinet, one top, one bottom. If you look on the back of the cabinet, you will see a 1x3 at the top, and often at the bottom(or the bottom rail of the cabinet), those are the mounting rails gunguy refers to. Only screw thru these rails, not thru the back plywood of the cabinet. I agree that more is better, do not use standard drywall screws, use cabinet screws, #12x2 1/2 or 3".

We sell GRK to the contractors here; they make special cabinet screws that are thin and long.

I have some left over 2 1/2" deckmate screws and 2 1/2" coarse drywall screws. Will either of these be ok? I would also plan to use finishing washers with the screws for increased surface area.

Deck/drywall screws are thinner, #8, while cabinet screws are #10-12, more shear resistance. Two screws are OK for small cabinets, but I prefer to use as many screws as there are studs behind a cabinet, two per stud.
