I have read a number of posts on the forum but I still confused and looking for some help. I understand backerboard is required when you are tiling on a bathtub wall. I have to replace the wall around my bathtub as they were poorly done and water had leaked under the silicon. Can I use the greenboard if I am planning to put a fiberglass tub surround kit on top of it?

Welcome to the forums!
Greenboard should be fine, don't forget to caulk where the suround meets the greenboard.

If it just one of those thin plastic surrounds, greenboard would be OK. Some of the better mold surrounds go up directly on the studs.
