I just had my alarm service install a cellular backup to my existing LYNX system which was vintage 1998. Needless to say the panel needed an upgrade which the security company did for free. My question is I seem to remember the display was backlit on my old system and on the new one only the keypad is lit. Should the display be illuminated when the keypad is or is the new console defective?

I think that the display backlight only comes on when it is active. It's an energy conservation feature. There may be a setting for it to be on constantly, but you would have to dig through the installer manual.
