I am trying to decide on a kitchen sink--should I choose a cast iron sink, a stainless steel one, or refinish our old one? We are remodeling a 1912 home, so a cast iron sink seems better design-wise, and I love the smooth white finish. But over time, will I regret it due to scratches and nicks? Should I get a stainless steel sink instead? Or can I take my old cast iron sink somewhere to have a new finish baked on? It has two sinks and (best of all) drain-tables on both sides. I likely won't be able to find another like it, but I would only refinish it if I could get an equally hard, baked-on finish as the original finish was, which is probably cost-prohibitive. And cost is an issue. Any suggestions?

The house is from 1912, but how old is the kitchen?? The sink you describe sounds like a 30's cast iron type. Larger metropolitan areas have places that can properly redo an iron sink, but look around for a good powder coater, almost as good. Both will eventually scratch, and/or ding. From what you describe, most other styles just would not fit in. Although they do make stainless sinks with side drainboards as you describe. They would be more in the 40's era. In the end, this is a personal choice, what do want your kitchen to look like??? Any sink like you describe will be pricey.
