I expect a kitchen hood fan to pull smoke / steam with gusto. But I could be wrong.
I have a GE spacesaver microwave / elec. range hood combo that looks pretty close to JVM1640AJ/BJ/CJ/SJ/WJ at https://www.consumerswarehouse.com/shop/cwcspecs/GE/JVM1640CJCC.pdf - the fan chanells are exactly the same anyway.
The range vents will hold 1 single sheet of newspaper up but not 2 (of course I have no idea if newspaper is a good test!). In any case, it definately doesnt seem to pull smoke very "urgently", so to say.
It vents to the outside and at least I can certainly see the vent hood open on the side of the house when i activate the fan so that is good.
Questions / Observations that I could use some help on:
- Makes plenty of noise - too much, to be honest - but I guess it's not an unreasonalbe amount - can I replace it with something quiteer?
- It has 3 intakes: 2 over the range that channel air up either side of the microwave like mini-ducts. There is also one intake on the top of the microwave itself.
- It only has 2 filters: the 2 over the range - they are loose mesh metal grease filters... arent the filters supposed to be tighter? Shouldnt there be a filter OR a blocker of some kind on the top microwave vent? To be fair if everything worked well i guess teh lower over-the-range filters would catch everything but I wonder if blocking this top one would help increase suction at the lower ones?

Never got an answer to this one.
Just had some work done and removed the drywall around the vent pipe. It was disconnected. I think that is PART of the problem. Still wondering about the intakes though. Seems kind of strange.
