We just moved into a new home. It has a non functioning alarm system. The only name is on one of the keypads and it says ADCO/Federal Alarm Systems, inc. It appears to have two keypads and a control box. There are two IRs and many, many doors and window contacts. I do not have a key for the alarm panel box. Is there an easy way to get one? I plan to upgrade to something like an Ademco vista-20ps. I'll use some of the existing wiring and contacts but plan on new panel, keypads, graphic type, and new IRs and maybe some wireless keyfobs. Does this sound like a good plan?
First thing is the key, any suggestions?

For the lock, simply use a large flat screwdriver and torque the lock til it breaks. This is a really old hardware, and if the key isn't on top of the cabinet (as it often is), you probably won't find this key.
You have the right idea. The core wiring is probably in decent shape. Replacing the base system and keypads along with the powered items like the motions is the way to go. You will probably find a couple of the door/window contacts failed either open or closed, as well, but they are cheap and easy to replace.
