when starting w/choke, starts fine; open choke, engine stalls

Try opening the cloke just enough so the engine runs a little smoother, and let it warm up some before opening it all the way.
If that doesn't work, you've probably got some trash in the carburetor or somewhere else in the fuel system that's keeping the engine from getting enough gas.
