Hello - I have a DSC power series 1832 alarm system that I want to connect to a central monitoring station. I have connected it to the phne line via a RJ31X telephone jack and cord set. I set up the system to monitor the phone line such that it should report an error when the phone line is no longer sensed. Sure enough, when I unplug the phone line from the alarm system, the alarm detects the situation and gives me an error message. The message goes away when I reconnect the line. As a further test, I set up the system to answer incoming calls after 3 rings (this is for remote programming). Like clockwork, after 3 rings, the phone goes dead which tells me the alarm system is able to disconnect the rest of the house from the phone line. What is strange is I don't hear it picking up the phone however. I am expecting to hear a series of beeps (like when calling a fax machine or modem) but don't hear anything but the phone continuing to ring. What should I hear? Finally, I told the alarm to call my cell phone to perform auto remote programming (of course I don't expect remote programming to work - I just wanted to see if the alarm could dial out) and my cell never rings. The alarm is doing something, because once again, the home phone goes dead, so I know the alarm is taking control of the land line. So, I am wondering if I may have the two wires from the land line into the alarm system reversed. Could this prevent it from dialing out?

Thanks,
Rob

You won't hear anything. When it picks up the phone, it is waiting for a specific handshake tone generated by the download software. It's not like a modem.

If you just want to test dialer function, use the pager format.

Thanks - I tried that. It never calls my cell phone. I have noticed that each time I disarm the alarm after I set it off, I get "communications canceled" reading out on my display. I am aware of the setting to configure the cancel; if the alarm is disarmed X minutes after it getting set off. The default for that value is zero minutes, and I have confirmed that it is in fact 0 minutes. I assume 0 means the communication is not canceled even if the alarm is disarmed after going off. I should also mention that I let the alarm sound for at least 30 seconds before disarming, and still saw the "communications canceled" message (and my cell phone was never called). Is it possible that my alarm can not call out, and so it is canceling any further attempts once I disarm? If it can't call out, if I swap the R and T lines from the phone co, will that fix it possibly?

Thanks!
Rob

Have you set report codes for everything you want to activate the dialer? They all default to disabled. If you don't enter a code for each zone or system action you want to dial out, nothing happens.

From page 18 of the PC1832 install manual:

"Section [320] to [349] Reporting Codes
Program the reporting code for all events to be transmitted. For description of when each reporting event will be transmitted, refer to Appendix A – Reporting Codes. The panel also supports Automatic SIA and Automatic Contact ID reporting. Program data [00] to disable the reporting of an event. If any other data is programmed (Data [01] to [FF]) the panel will automatically generate the correct reporting event when transmitting to the central station. For all formats excluding Automatic SIA and Automatic Contact ID, the panel will not attempt to report an event if data [00] or data [FF] is programmed for the reporting code."
