I've got a 3 yr old AO Smith water heater that won't stay lit. The water heater is in the attic and and I live in Texas so the attic gets pretty hot. I've called the plumber to fix the problem. After replacing pretty much everything except for the tank the heater still does not want to stay lit. The plumber told me that my attic is getting too hot resulting in the failure. I haven't had this problem until recently, so I'm not sure I entirely buy it. Is it possible that the attic temp is causing the problem?

The heat will not shut off the pilot lite. Have you changed the thermo coupler?

Actually, we had a post about this not long ago and I think the water heater manufacturer agreed that it had something to do with the heat. I will look to try and find that post. I will get back to you.

Have you checked the vent to make sure it is vented properly? Also check on your roof and check to see if it is possible that a strong breeze isn't blowing up and blowing the pilot out.

Thermo coupler has been replaced. Checked out ventilation and it is fine. Also, I've got another heater on the othe side of the house (in attic also) that isn't having any problems.

I haven't had time to find it yet, but if you look back about a month ago, you may find a post similar to yours.
