There are marks on both of the gears, should be a dimple or dash on a tooth of each gear. Just rotate the cam and crank to line the marks up and drop the cam in.

ok the only thing that fell was the gear on the crank, its keyed so no problem, the cam pully has a dot on a tooth. is all i have to do is align the dots together? i know that is not full top dead center, but i guess that would be for timing? if only i hadnt let it fall off i wouldnt be in this mess. but the cam was not removed just the gear was rotated after the gear fell off the crank.

Yes, all you have to do is align the timing marks. If you can post your model number, I may be able to find an illustration for you. Usually there is a dot on the cam and a dash on the crank (may be the other way around) gear used for alignment, but I guess it could also be two dots.
