I live in a 1961 house which was remodeled in the 90s. The toilets are very good, stirdy toilets but for some reason one of them is not flushing all the way. When I flush, first I have to hold the handle for a few seconds, then I have to repeat several times because not everything goes. This especially happens with toilet paper. I can never get the paper to go through the first time around. Any advise will help. Maybe this is a clue - the other toilet flushing mechanism is old and needs to be replaced - the balance between the chain and the whole is not good and sometimes it runs forever until I manualy adjust and sometimes it doesn't flush - maybe they both need to be replaced? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes the guts inside the tank need to be replaced, especially the tanks with the float ball. Some of the newer kits have an settings to control the flush. I have one that's getting close to that time. I just did one that was so old the, filler tube was molded into the tank.

Don't use Charmin paper. It's known to clog the pipes.

Good Morning:gmorning:

As far as the toilet not flushing well, I would be checking out the jets in the toilet. Do you use any kind of bowl cleaner in the tank like 2000 flushes or that blue goop one? I would take a coat hanger and clean out the little holes around the underside of the rim and make sure there is a charge of water coming from the hole at the bottom of the tank,
Next make sure the water level in the tank is correct. It should be about 1/2" below the overflow tube in the center of the tank.
If nothing has helped so far, run a closet auger through the toilet. It doesn't sound plugged, but it could be partially plugged.
And it could be a vent problem, But I am more willing to bet it is just that AMERICAN STANDARD toilet needs to be replaced.
If you care anything about water consumption of this planet, you should replace the toilet if it is not a 1.6 gpf

about the other toilet, You can get a Fluidmaster repair kit with all the parts needed to rebuild most toilets at the big box stores. Use Fluidmaster...

Depending on the age of the toilet, you may wish to replace that one also.

In a condo I've been getting ready,a plumber installed a new low-gallon flush highboy toilet for a disabled man. The toilet flushed like a pressurized toilet! Whoosh, with little water. I looked inside and discoverd the entire area around the 'flapper- is a hollow cylinder of no water. The cylinder holds back the water (like the parting of the Red Sea). Then when the flapper is raised, the water so suddenly drops through the hole out of the tank, that it mimmicks a pressurized toilet. I can't believe they never thought of this years ago, as it is based on simple physics. Whenever I see stuff like this, I ask myself why I couldn't have thought of that -first.

We replaced all the Fluidmaster 'guts' in our toilets recently with new complete sets and all are set to '9' for flushing. The one in our bedroom still will not flush all the paper, etc and I have to hold the handle down for a long time. Its getting really annoying.

What else can I do? Will tightening the chain help? I saw on Fluidmaster website about turning the dial past '9' on older toilets but all ours are same age (35) and two work just fine as far as flushing completely.

Tank water level is fine and everything else seems ok.

Thanks
