Unfortunately we had a small flood when a pipe burst while we were on vacation. On the bright side, we had already been talking about updating our bathrooms, so now the insurance company gets to help pay for it...
Our house was built with one piece fiberglass tub enclosures, I hate these and intend to replace them with cast iron tubs and tile surrounds. The bathrooms also have vinyl flooring that I'm planning to replace with tile.
My question is about the order in which to install the tub and tile. Is it proper to lay the tile while the tub is out and set the tub on top of the new tile or set the tub then lay the tile up to the tub? In one bathroom I'll have to remove the vanity to get the new tub in, but the other will not interfere with installing the tub, so should I tile under or around the vanities???

I say place tub in 1st, then do yourj tile.
The type of vanity, I think, will determine how you apply the tile. If you have a 48" or 60" or so large built in type bulk vanity, I'd install vanity then tile. But for a smaller more decorative type vanity, I'd install vanity over tile.

Agree, tile after tub. You will need to tile up to the tub, so exact placement is a must before tile.
Over time, vanities will be replaced before tile floors, so tile before vanity.
Keep in mind that the subfloor for tile needs to be 1 1/4"(min), or you will have problems with cracking grout and/or tiles. Plywood subfloor+1/2" backer boards is usually OK.
