since you cant put the tinted poly over laquer, can you first put a coat of zar ultra maxx then the poly?

you should be able to a tinted poly over lacquer, just not the other way around. Do a sample on the back of a door to check it, but it should be just fine.

what poly and what lacquer? If it a brushable ploy (minwax) and a half way decent lacquer you can. If it is a muti-component urethane or a crappy lacquer, you can't. Take some lacquer thinner on a rag and wipe the cabinets. if the finish comes off, you can't. if it is not effected you can. My gut reaction is that you can. Or you could test a small area on the back of a door to see if it will work.

I don't often use any lacquer finishes but it has always been my understanding that you could apply an oil base finish over a lacquer b ut never apply lacquer over an oil base finish.

I agree with testing the poly on an inconspicuous area first!

im not sure what brand of laquer but i was going to use miniwax, but it says not to use it. i just found out today that ben moore has a brand of poly stain that is ok to put directly over the laquer with just a light sand. thanks for the help
