We are building a deck - 26' wide with 22' of those feet being a ledger on the house and 4' extending past the house. The deck is 18' feet deep so I will have two rows of posts running parrallel to the house and the beams running parallel to the house. I was planning on putting a post at the corner 4' out from the house and just extending the ledger to it, but I realized the ledger will be at joist height, not beam height. Is this OK to have one post go to joist height and the rest at beam? Is there a better way?

Thanks

Seems to me the extended portion would and should be the same height as the portion fastened to the house. What am I missing?

Ken, I think he is worried about having to cut the post higher than the ones under the beams. You won't have a problem , since the post should extend up to floor level and be bolted two ways through the bands. Hope I got it right. Never can tell.

Larry, I think you are exactly right. I went back and read the post again, and I agree with you. Thanks.

Yes thanks - that is what I mean. Im not sure what you mean by bolted two ways through the bands though?

I was figuring I would have to bring the 4x4 up to the ledger height and bolt the ledger (if you can still call it that not attached to the house at this point) through the post. Guess that will make precise placement of this post very important. Or would it be better to have the ledger sit on top of this post using the proper fastener?

I guess you can still call it a ledger, since it is a ledger extension. You will have a band board attached to the ledger extension. I like to extend the verticals through and bolt them with 1/2" galvanized bolts, one in the ledger and one in the band, offset from each other. Standing your deck on the vertical is perfectly acceptable, provided you have enough surface to do it. 4x4's are marginal. 6x6's would be better, so I would bolt them.

Thanks. I think I got it now. I should place that post pretty much dead corner so the rim joist (band?) can attach to it as well as the ledger extension, since there will not be a beam there. 6x6 makes sense for greater surface area if setting it on top, although for that one maybe I would be best to use a 4x4 and bolt it as you suggest extending the 4x4 straight up for the railing post too, since it should be in the exact spot I want the railing post to go.

Only downside I can see is it will mess with my skirting plans with that one post so far out.
