I just bought a direct to stud tub surround and I was wondering if I could put it up over hardibacker? The reason I ask is because of the noise reduction that it will provide. It might sound like a stupid question but I feel better if the hardibacker was on the wall not only for the sound reduction but also for the extra water protection if any water or moisture were to get passed the tub surround. If I can put the surround over the hardibacker do I have to seal the seams and if I do seal the seams what do I seal them with? Thinset or regular joint compound? Thanks to everyone that helps.
