Considering adding a bonus room, doing most of the work myself, with an architect designing the space.

Do architectural plans include the required building materials?

certainly. this information is required for a permit. i'm not sure to what extent you're curious about; but it is very doubtful that there will actually be a line item list with material quantities, but the plans will definitely spec out what types of materials are necessary for construction.

In the case of custom designs, at least in my area the degree of detail provided depends on the architect. I see plans containing the absolute minimum needed to get them past the plan examiner at the city building department, and I see plans were the architect spells out many details of material selection and construction technique. I've never seen a set of custom plans, though, that included a complete materials callout, that estimate is usually performed by the contractor as part of his bid, and this information is almost always considered confidential and not shown to the prospective customer. One exception to this rule is in the case of purchased plans available "off-the-shelf" for homes and other structures.
