I am recaulking my husband's shower and when taking out the old caulk, which seems to go on forever and ever, I find that there is about a 1/2 inch space between the pan and vinyl shower wall! I don't know what to do...there has been leaking but no damage (yet) that can be detected. Any suggestions on how I can fill the gap without using the layers and layers of caulking?

Welcome to the forums! You say there is a 1/2" gap, is that from top to bottom or from side to side. If there is a prefab pan in place, it will have almost a 1" lip on it, so unless there is an air gap above the base, you may be ok. You may want to post a couple of pictures on a site such as photobucket.com and copy/paste the HTML code to your reply post. Also, you won't put "caulk" back in the shower. You will need to use a product such as GE Silicone II, BUT, the shower must be absolutely 99 44/100% DRY before you re-silicone it or you will get mold behind the silicone. Once you finish your gutting process, set a fan in the shower for a day or so to circulate the air and get it really dry.
