Hi,
I would like the very best stain for the horizontal surfaces on my deck railings. I am wondering if a marine type stain would be best. I live in a zone 4 hard snowey winter area and am told that is what causes a finish to go bad early.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forums!

Exterior horizontal surfaces are always difficult to get a coating to last on. I'm not aware of any marine stains. I wouldn't recomend a spar/marine urathane or paint for this type of application.

As always, you will find better coatings at our local paint store [not dept] They will also know which of their coatings hold up the best in your area. Generally price is a good indicator of quality.

Thanks Mark,
A friend recommended Sherwin Williams deck stain. Would you agree?
I appreciate your help.

SWP's Deck Scapes is usually my first choice. I prefer the waterborne.
