I have a Yazoo 72 in. riding mower with a Kohler 23 hp Model K582 engine. The engine cranks but won't start. There is no spark at the plugs. I think the problem is with the breaker points. On this model, the points are mounted on the side of the governor, which sits on top of the engine. The points are activated by a pin which protrudes through the side of the governor and is apparently driven by a cam inside the governor. When cranking the engine, however, the pin doesn't move and therefore the points don't open and the plugs get no spark. There is power to the points, though, because when I manually open them with the key on, I get a spark. I'm reluctant to tear into the governor to see what gives, because that would result in having to re-time everything. What else can I do?

Download a manual at Kohlers website. Sounds like a cam problem but rule out the simple first. The pin that opens the points moves very little so look closely,
