Hi - My toilet pipes are banging. This only happens after water has been running and stopped anywhere in the house and I flush the toilet very soon after the water has stopped in the house. Is this something that I can fix myself? Please - any help will be appreciated ! Thanks so much :)

this is called water hammer, and it is very common, especially in copper pipes, to fix it I suggest putting a water hammer arestor, you can put this usually closer to the end of the lines, you can get ones that screw onto your sink shutoffs, and then your basin supplies attach to these, water they do is provide a cushion for the water. As the water is moving at a fast speed and some plumbing fixtures turn off fast that causing the water to hammer, also make sure all your waterlines are properly supported if you can, using talon clips works great.

Thanks for much for your help, but now I need some more as I do like trying to fix things myself with the cost of hiring someone - I don't know how to go about installing the water arestor and where? I did try finding a site that would help me with this and I had no luck or didn't understand what it was saying. Hope you can help me now - or am I a hopeless case :-(

I know they make some to hook onto your washing machine hook-ups. You just turn off the water, unhook the hoses to the washing machine. Hook the water hammer arresters to the washing machine valve and then hook the hoses to the end of the water hammer arresters.

Those are the simplest one I have seen.

There are also some that you will need to cut into the water pipe and use a copper to ips adapter to connect up.

And absolutePlumb also mentioned some that hook to the supply tubes under the sink. I have not seen those yet.
