I live in a 2 year old "soft loft" building. That's where the cheapo builders decide not to finish the ceilings properly and leave them as raw concrete.

I currently have guys plastering my concrete ceiling to make it smooth. They are telling me it's OK to mud and paper tape over the silicone that runs along the top of all of the walls in my unit. This Silione bridges the gap between the ceiling and the walls. They sampled a small area and it looked totally great, even though it was not dry.

Half of the tape was be mudded over the silicone and the other half was mudded into the concrete ceiling. I know that nothing really sticks to Silicone, but if there is mud between the paper and the Silcone, I'm trying to think of what the down side would be besides occasional cracking every few years.

Otherwise, if I leave the Silicone exposed, it's going to look strange to have smooth ceiling and smooth walls and then have the strip of White Silicone. I don't see any point in painting over raw Silicone since it cracks right away.
I would also prefer not to do any cove molding, since I'm going for a spare and minimal look.

Any reasonable advice or solutions would be great.

Welcome to the forums!

How wide is the caulking? 1/2 of the width of the tape?

How thick is the mud applied under the tape and over the caulking?

The Silicone caulk varies from 1/4" wide to 1/2" wide. The mud would completely fill in the space between the caulk and the paper.

A small part of the paper would be mudded to the wall as well.

It might be a good idea to apply a coat of zinnser's BIN primer over the silicone caulking. It might help it to adhere better although there may still be some issues if there is any flexing with the caulk.
