What should be installed first? the kitchen cabinets or the solid wood floor? Right now the kitchen is gutted with a plywood sub floor installed. I was going to install the wood floor, then cover it with something, then install cabinets on top of floor.

I would install the cabinets first, then the floor.
It would be a waste of flooring to go under the cabinets.

I would install the floor first. The dishwasher may not fit under the counter top if the floor in front of the cabinet is higher than the floor under the cabinet.

floor first.
ever see baseboard under kitchen cabinets?
If you install teh cabinets first, you create other problems.
You will need to install a baseboard.
You will need a gap between the floor and cabinet for expansion and shrinakge. the baseboard will cover teh gap, however it wont stop the gap from collecting dirt, food adn draw in bugs, ants.
Plus you have the dishwasher thing to worry about.
The floor goes down first.
If you want to save materials, install a substitute starting a couple of inches in from teh edge of the kick board. Although that is generally more work then just using the floor.

Just want to second what wirepuller38 said: if you floor into the dishwasher space under an existing counter you can definitely end up with insufficient vertical clearance for most brands of dishwashers - in fact often only the expensive Fisher & Paykels will fit at all.
