I was wondering if anyone can give me a quick idea how to attach an existing pergola to the back side of my house. Going to run 2x8x20"ish rafters to house above back window. I have vinyl siding and I need to know how and what to attach the rafters to for support. A backer board of some sort, and then do I just screw it into the plywood after removing the vinyl siding or do I need to find the studs and go into them?

You need to attach framing to framing. The wall sheathing will not provide adequate support.
