Hi, stupid question time. I'm drywalling a ceiling at the moment and I'm finding that although the screws appear to be biting into the joists, they stop just short of 'dimpling' the drywall. I'm getting the screws almost flush (but not quite) with the paper but then they just start to spin as if striking something solid. It's happening in many different areas of the ceiling. Any ideas?

You might try backing the screw out a little and trying again.

What size screw are you using? and is it course thread or fine thread? With 1/2" to 5/8" drywall you use 1 1/4" course thread screws to go into wood. You might be hitting something metal like a nail or a cover plate of some sort.

Sounds as if you are using drill point sheetrock screws. They are intended for metal studs and will not pull tight on wood. Look on the end of the screw and see if there is a drill point on it. If so, you need 1 5/8" course thread drywall screws.
