A piece of plastic that attached the float ball to that unit broke. I bought a toilet repair kit and in this kit there is a flapper. The device that my toilet has is not the flapper, but a cylinder. That part is working properly. My question is, do I need to replace both units, or just not use the flapper that came with the kit? The replacement kit is by Peerless; what's in my toilet is by Mansfield. I appreciate any other advice or tips.

No, you do not need to replace both parts. One part is the water supply (ballcock), and the other is the flush valve.
Mansfield flush valves are pretty good flush valves, and if works, leave it alone. You can even get replacement rubber seals for them if needed.
If you have not installed anything yet, I would bring back that kit, and purchase a Fluidmaster ballcock. It will replace the style you have and they have a great track record. I think they cost about $10.00 at most hardware or big box stores.

I will return the Peerless and get a Fluidmaster; actually it was right next to the Peerless. The only reason I didn't go with Mansfield is because their products are difficult to find. Thanks a bunch for your help.
