I bought my home several years ago that had needed a little work, now I am focusing on the bathroom that has some minor problems, including the tub. I do not use this tub myself so I never really looked closely but now I am worried now that I took a much closer look.

There are chips out of the tub that are deeper than I thought scattered throughout the midsection of the tub:

I wonder how old this tub might be? The tub is directly on the studs, is one complete piece, 72" tall and 60" wide. Were these tubs around way back in '93 when this house was built or do you think it was installed at a later time? Do you think it is fiberglass? It feels pretty solid. Could water seep through these chipped out spots?

Do you think I should attempt a repair or purchase a new one? Thank you!

It appears that it is Fiberglass. There are excellent two part epoxy puttys you can fill the chips with. Then repaint the entire enclosure with an epoxy finish specially for tubs and shower enclosures. It's a time consuming and tedious process to have it look half way decent when you're done, But far easier and cheaper than replacing the unit.
